PHOTO WORKSHOPS IN ESSAOUIRA
I also offer one or two day workshops for independent travellers who have made their own way to Essaouira and would like to improve their photography and take a tour at the same time. These can be tailored to suit but can include a basic introduction to your camera’s controls and how to compose. The 2 day workshop includes your own website gallery page. Email me for further details.
DO I NEED TO BRING A COMPUTER WITH ME?
For the holidays in Essaouira most people don’t bring a laptop as we work on our computer here to review images. Increasingly guests are bringing tablets to download their images and review them which seems quicker. For the 10 day tour people do tend to arrive with laptops as they like to process some of their images in the evening. Also for the tours we don’t review images each day on the company laptop so you’ll need to bring your own device for feedback.
I ONLY HAVE ONE LENS FOR MY CAMERA?
Many soon realise the provided 18 – 55mm kit lens with most cameras is restricted however before you invest in another lens do email me first and I will advise you what may be suitable to buy. Also you may need to enjoy the week’s photography before you choose to decide on another purchase and by doing so understand what kind of photography you like and the ideal focal length lens for this.
WHAT WEATHER CAN I EXPECT?
The holidays and tours can be slightly different. For the photography holidays in Essaouira, the weather on the coast is temperate all year round at about 20 – 30 degrees taking into account the increased cooling summer winds to offset the heat. It can be breezy in the evenings so if anything bring a jumper or fleece when arriving October to April. The tours can vary from mountain temperatures of 10 to desert temperatures of 20+ on the same tour. The winter months of November and February when we run tours will be cold at the higher altitudes so do come prepared.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HOLIDAYS AND TOURS
The holidays are based in one location (Essaouira) and the emphasis for the week is on learning photography/taking better photos and having a relaxing/cultural experience. The tours are not suited to beginners and are focused on developing your photographic technique and compositional skills as well as indulging in a cultural experience/adventure.
HOW INTENSIVE ARE THE TOURS AND LEARNING HOLIDAYS?
As intensive as you want. You’re here for the photography but there’s some afternoon time to do your own thing during the week courses. On the tours there’s very little time to yourself but you won’t be complaining! I try to get the balance about right and take into account individual needs.
MY PARTNER AND I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE A ROOM. IS THERE ANY DISCOUNT?
Yes it’s possible. Our holidays are also great for couples or friends. Share your photography holiday in Essaouira with a partner or friend for £1650 (outside holiday peaks) and you’ll save a small bundle and both learn photography together or alternatively for £1150 they can spend the week doing their own thing.
WHAT IF NO ONE ELSE BOOKED FOR THE SAME WEEK?
Our group sizes are usually 3 -5. We rarely get a single person out for the week. I’ll let you know in advance if that’s a possibility.
I ONLY HAVE A ‘POINT & SHOOT’ CAMERA – CAN I STILL LEARN SOMETHING?
You can but it will be more challenging. Hybrid cameras are just about Ok for us and you to work with. Anything too basic of which there is little on the market today will make it a frustrating experience. So camera controls that are easier to get to are better. I always say buy big. Larger motorbikes are safer than mopeds. It’s the same with cameras although it seems counter intuitive; they are easier ‘to drive’. You can hire a camera whilst on holiday with us.
CAN I BE SURE THAT THE ACCOMMODATION LISTED ON THE WEBSITE WILL BE WHAT I’ll GET?
Yes pretty much, however if your booking is last minute during the peak periods particularly Easter, August and Xmas we may need to use an alternative hotel of a similar standard close by.
IS MY MONEY SAFE?
We’re a small business and we don’t work with large overheads or have contractors to pay. Financial protection is expensive for us and we’d rather not pass on the costs to you. Any Google search using our name will give some background information. You can also pay via Credit card with Paypal for financial security.
DO I GET MY MONEY BACK IF I HAVE TO CANCEL FOR AN EMERGENCY?
We’ve had clients cancel at the last minute due to family illness. For our holidays, it’s not a problem for us to find another date for you and if that’s not possible we’ll refund your money less any bank charges. For the tours it’s often not possible to offer any refunds unless we can fill your space with another person. In that instance you should contact your insurance company.
I’M A BEGINNER, IS THAT A PROBLEM?
There’s a good mix on the holidays, with all levels catered for. Ideally you’ll have taken any new camera out of the box and had a play but generally if you don’t fully understand what all the controls do then it’s not a problem. That’s what the week’s course is also about. If you’re an advanced photographer there are still things to learn and the holiday atmosphere and shared learning also means you won’t feel out of place. On the tours there are higher levels of camera competency, as we have less time for teaching the basics.
ARRIVING AS A SINGLE PERSON
There’s no single supplement and the holidays and tours are perfectly set-up for singles.
We also take great care to ensure that you feel at home. From the moment your flight touches down you’ll be looked after, with a private transfer bringing you to your hotel. With friendly hotel staff and an assortment of ‘onboard’ locals to chat to, plus evening dining with your host and other guests during your week, you won’t feel alone. Of course a week learning photography is only part of your holiday, the rest of the time you could be shopping in the souks, horse riding, taking a Hammam or simply relaxing by a pool or on the terrace with a book.
WHO NORMALLY GOES ON A PHOTOGRAPHY HOLIDAY OR TOUR?
Actually the age range is pretty vast from 20 until 75. The week long courses usually attract people in the range of 25-55 with a leaning towards ladies. People who book on the tours are usually those with some camera experience behind them.
